THE ONLY LASTING TRUTH IS CHANGE

Photography by Sean Sytsma, Dalhousie University Art Gallery, 2020.

The legacy of Octavia Butler’s The Parable of the Sower and the philosophy of its beloved protagonist, Lauren Olamina, are guiding compasses in this piece. Using text from Earthseed: The Books of the Living as a prompt, the artist meditates on change as an inevitable truth that we can shape and that we must adapt to throughout our human experience. The spontaneous composition of this double weave emerges from an orange trunked base with mirrors that reflect multiple possibilities back at the gazing viewer. The only lasting truth is Change is an invitation to a portal of ever shifting abstraction.
